First Lutheran Church of Ketchikan Receives National Grant Funding
First Lutheran Church has received $175,000 from the National Fund for Sacred Places, a program of Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. First Lutheran Church has roots in Norwegian customs and traditions since being founded by fishermen and their families in 1925. Worship services in the early years were conducted in both Norwegian and English. The building is both historic and iconic, prominently located on the rock at 1200 Tongass Ave with a tall steeple cross leading mariners and pilots safely back to port. The church building is on the National Register of Historical Places. The exterior of the building was refurbished during the summer of 2026.
The church is now often used for community concerts and orchestra practice as well as the congregational events of worship, youth group and children’s ministries, adult Bible studies, choir and handbell choir and more. People need not be Lutheran to take part in our activities or worship with us. We are a welcoming community of believers that welcomes diversity. Our goal is to share God’s’ love through worship and service to the people of Ketchikan and beyond. We believe that all people can work together to share God’s love through service to others. Join us at 10 am on Sundays as we celebrate God’s love and forgiveness.

Church Services & Activities
This historic landmark will be celebrating 100 years of Lutheran Church services, weddings and funerals in 2025. The church is in need of structural repairs, but is optimistic that a financial solution will be found and continues to be a welcoming church for all ages, with with Sunday services filled with rich liturgy and children's church.
The First Lutheran Church Puppets is a very popular program for children and adults alike. Many Sunday services include a delightful, inspiring, musical message from the puppeteers.
Young children attend church with their families and then move downstairs for their own special message and activities during the sermon.
Youth Group has their own activities for grades 6-12 on Sunday evenings. They come to hang out, chat and have fun, faithful fellowship with fellow youth. There they enjoy snacks, songs, and the word. Come on over!
